Leeds manager Marcelo Bielsa says it will be ‘precious’ to experience a fervent Elland Road on Sunday — and has urged his players to give their fans something to celebrate.

Asked about the atmosphere he hopes that fans will create, Bielsa replied: ‘It’s not about what I would like, but it’s what the fans always give.

‘They always support the team unconditionally. It’s difficult to imagine a support better or bigger than the one we have already received.

‘The presence of a classic opponent increases the enthusiasm. It’s going to be precious to witness it.’

The build-up to the game has been dominated by speculation over Bielsa’s long-term future.

The Argentine is out of contract in the summer and American Jesse Marsch, the former RB Leipzig boss, has emerged as the club’s preferred choice to replace him.

‘It’s not a subject we should talk about at this moment,’ insisted Bielsa.

Leeds have been dragged back into the relegation battle after going three games without a win and are just six points above the drop zone.

They have been badly hit by injuries to key players this term, notably England internationals Kalvin Phillips and Patrick Bamford, who remain sidelined.

But Bielsa added: ‘It’s an obligation (to stay up) and the injuries don’t justify the season we’re having.’
