Ralf Rangnick admits he DOESN’T KNOW what technical director Darren Fletcher’s role is at Manchester United… but interim boss says it is ‘good to have him on board’ for his influence around the training ground

  • Darren Fletcher is United technical director but sits in the dugout during games
  • The Scotsman has also helped running training sessions at Carrington
  • Ralf Rangnick admitted he is not entirely sure what Fletcher’s role is
  • But insisted he is happy to have him around and praised his impact on the team

Ralf Rangnick has admitted he is not sure what Darren Fletcher’s role at Old Trafford is, but praised the former Manchester United midfielder for having a positive impact on the team.

The Scotsman is United’s technical director but has been regularly spotted in the dugout alongside Rangnick and his coaching staff.

Even more unusually for a man with his job title, the 38-year-old has helped running training sessions at Carrington after Michael Carrick and Kieran McKenna left the coaching staff when Rangnick was named interim manager in December.

Despite the confusion over Fletcher’s role, the German is clearly happy to have him around.

‘I can only talk about what I’ve experienced in the last 11 to 12 weeks,’ Rangnick said in his press conference ahead of the game against Leeds.

‘He has always been part of almost every training session and each game.

‘Whenever I have had a question about what he thinks, because he obviously knows the players, he has known them for a long time. I could always, and will always, ask him for his opinion. So it is good to have him in the team.

‘What is his role in with regard to the club? I don’t really know, to be honest. I can only tell you what is happening in the training sessions, around the training sessions and around the games. In those areas, it is good to have him on board.’

Fletcher spent 13 seasons at United, winning 13 major trophies including five Premier League titles and the Champions League in 2008.

He returned to Old Trafford in October 2020 to coach United’s Under-16 team and was promoted to first-team coach in January last year, before being appointed as the club’s first-ever technical director two months later.

Along with football director John Murtough, Fletcher is expected to have a major role to play in the search for a new permanent manager, with Rangnick expected to move into a consultancy role for the next two years.
