Manchester United ‘have started the process to install a new permanent manager’ with a shortlist of candidates now ‘finalised’.

The Paris Saint-Germain manager Mauricio Pochettino and Ajax boss Erik ten Hag are among the leading contenders for the job.

Interim manager Ralf Rangnick is set to move upstairs to a two-year consultancy role at the end of the season with United aiming to make their new appointment as quickly as possible so they can fully prepare for the 2022-2023 season.

The Athletic report that this process is now underway and the names on the shortlist are being contacted to begin discussions.

United sacked Ole Gunnar Solskjaer back in late November and decided to continue with Rangnick as an interim boss until the end of the season while they went through the process of appointing a new permanent manager.

The former Southampton and Tottenham manager Pochettino would bring previous Premier League experience but is currently chasing silverware with PSG.

They beat Real Madrid 1-0 in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie last week and sit 13 points clear at the top of the Ligue 1 standings.

Ten Hag’s Ajax are also still in the Champions League and face Benfica this Wednesday, the same night United travel to Atletico Madrid in the same competition.

German coach Rangnick has won eight, drawn five and lost two of his 15 matches in charge of United so far.

Sunday’s 4-2 win at Leeds United opened up a four-point gap to West Ham outside the Champions League places in the Premier League table but other top four contenders Arsenal, Wolves and Tottenham all have games in hand.

United exited the FA Cup at the fourth round stage, losing on penalties to Championship club Middlesbrough following a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford.

Although results and performances have been mixed, Rangnick has still only lost one match in 90 minutes – against Wolves in early January.
