UK Weather: Weekend weather is set to be fine but wind and expected return next week

Weekend weather is set to be fine but wind and freezing Icelandic air will send temperatures plunging as low as -7C in Scotland next week.

The Met Office today forecasted largely sunny weather after lifting its warnings for snow and ice as the country managed to dodge Storm Gladys.

It forecasted a chilly start to the day with some frost and wind in the west and north, with gales across the northwest of Scotland.

Across Northern Ireland and Scotland, the weather is today cloudy with some rain or drizzle which is expected to continue into tonight with a minimum temperature of -1C.

Tomorrow, it is set to start cloudy in Northern Ireland, western and northern Scotland with patchy rain which is expected to brighten up by the afternoon. Some cloudy weather is expected in the west and a little rain but it will be otherwise sunny with maximum temperatures of 12C.

But from Monday, wind and gales are predicted in the far northwest by the Met office and wintry showers, bringing freezing temperatures to Scotland.

The constantly changing weather has been attributed to a strong jet stream driving weather systems across the Atlantic.

Met Office chief meteorologist Andy Page said: ‘As Storm Franklin clears the UK and pushes into the near continent this afternoon the windy conditions will gradually ease and showers become fewer, leaving some dry, sunny weather for many.

The Met Office added that it expects windy and blustery weather on Monday, with wintry showers and gales and a period of wintry showers afterwards.

Weather is to be more settled on Tuesday and Wednesday but there is an increasing chance of rain in the south and west with temperatures reaching an average of 8-11C.

On average, the highest levels of rain are forecast for Monday- in western England and Wales.

Senior operational meteorologist Greg Dewhurst said: ‘The most unsettled day of the week will be Monday.

‘We are forecasting 20-30mm of rain on Monday.’

He added that lower amounts of rain are expected elsewhere on the same day.

The latest forecasts come after Storms Eunice, Dudley and Franklin caused chaos across the country in the last week, flooding around 400 properties.

There were 25 flood warnings and 29 flood alerts in place in England on Friday morning.

On Thursday, snow led to school closures in some Scottish areas and caused difficult driving conditions.

Schools were also forced to shut and travellers faced disruption after much of Northern Ireland was blanketed by overnight snow.
