Former Arsenal striker Ian Wright has teased a comeback after his grandson D’Margio Wright-Phillips claimed that he is a better finisher than him.

Wright-Phillips is currently plying his trade at Stoke City, and has broken into their first-team in recent weeks, scoring his first league goal for the Championship club back in January against Fulham.

When asked about his main attributes, the 20-year-old compared himself to his father, Shaun, who previously played for Manchester City and Chelsea, by saying: ‘It’s the low centre of gravity, the confidence to try and take on a player.’

He then raised eyebrows by adding: ‘With my grandad, I’d say I think I’ve got better finishing than him.’

Wright, who netted 113 Premier League goals in his illustrious career, was quick to respond as he wrote on social media: ‘Look at the chest of this yute’, followed by a series of laughing emojis.

He has now taken things a step further by posting images of himself in the gym after a workout.

In the pictures, he is seen with a towel over his head and an accompanying caption that reads: ‘Dmarg said he’s a better finisher so the come back starts now.’

Given that Wright officially retired from football in 2000, it appears clear that his post is a tongue-in-cheek dig at his grandson.

However, it could act as a reminder to Wright-Phillips that he still has a long way to go to replicate his grandfather’s achievements.

Wright won the Premier League and FA Cup in his playing days, while also picking up 33 caps for England.

Wright-Phillips could get his next chance to impress on Saturday when Stoke host Blackpool as Michael O’Neill’s side look to end their run of five games without a win in all competitions.
