Bitter spat between Man United technical director Darren Fletcher and angry fan at Old Trafford

‘You don’t f***ing care!’… ‘Who the f*** are you?!’: Details emerge of a bitter spat between Man United technical director Darren Fletcher and an angry fan at Old Trafford – with Scott McTominay also involved

  • An angry Man United fan clashed with Darren Fletcher during the Leicester draw
  • The incident occurred shortly after Kelechi Iheanacho put Leicester ahead
  • The fan also claimed Scott McTominay was involved but didn’t hear what he said

A Manchester United fan has lifted the lid on an X-rated spat with technical director Darren Fletcher on the subs bench at Old Trafford during the 1-1 draw against Leicester on Saturday.

Jamie Caplan, a 25-year-old United supporter, shouted at the bench in fury as Kelechi Iheanacho scored for Leicester in the Premier League tie, according to his account in the Manchester Evening News.

Caplan says he was angry at the lack of effort from the United squad but didn’t aim his words specifically at Fletcher until, he claims, the Scot asked him ‘who the f*** are you?’

He told MEN: ‘He’s the one who took offence and turned around and asked me who the f*** I was and to sit down. That’s when I went back at Fletcher because I took that very personally.

‘I then went into a bit of a rage, so he didn’t say much then. And then Scott McTominay turned around. I couldn’t make out what he was saying because I was already walking up the stairs by this point.’

McTominay had been on the pitch for 55 minutes before being replaced by Marcus Rashford. United slipped behind eight minutes later.

Fletcher, meanwhile, was appointed as United’s first technical director in March 2021. He had previously been working in a coaching role under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

‘As a matchgoing fan, I put a lot of money into the club, I go watch them a lot. ‘”Where’s the f***ing fight? You don’t care.” That’s pretty much word-for-word what I said. He (Fletcher) didn’t like it. But he can’t be in denial, he was there. He knows the standards that are required to be top-level.

‘He was in a dressing room with Roy Keane and if he turned around to me and say that’s a good enough United side then he’s a liar and I don’t believe him. Just look at all the old pros, they all say the same thing, it’s just not there, the desire. It isn’t there.’

Caplan added to the MEN that he had no regrets over his outburst and would do it again. He left the match 10 minutes after the incident and was on the concourse when Fred equalised shortly after Iheanacho’s strike.

He also said that he would like to speak to United to resolve the issue and not get banned.

Speaking on Sky Sports after the match, United legend Gary Neville said his old team were ‘really poor’ against Leicester.

‘That was really bad out there today. I thought it (international break) might work for Manchester United, give them a little break from the club, come back and just have a right go in this last nine games,’ Neville said.

‘This is going to be a long two months for those Manchester United players and those Manchester United fans if they are going to play like that because it was really poor out there today.

‘That was a really tough watch. I’m not angry, I don’t think any Manchester United fans left the ground angry tonight, because we’ve gone probably past anger. We’re just flat, we’re bored.

‘And there was nothing there today. I do genuinely believe players care, but they lack direction, and that comes from the very top.’

The draw leaves United languishing seventh in the Premier League standings, three points off the top four but with games against Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea in their final eight matches.

United return to Premier League action in Saturday’s early kick-off against Frank Lampard’s Everton, who are battling to avoid relegation.
