Thibaut Courtois claims Barcelona’s 4-0 demolition of Real Madrid last month was a ‘FLUKE’ and blames loss to El Clasico rivals on a ‘very bad night’ after returning to form by sinking Chelsea in the Champions League

  • Barcelona thrashed Real Madrid 4-0 in last month’s El Clasico at the Bernabeu
  • Thibaut Courtois believes their win was a ‘fluke’ as he says Real had a ‘bad night’
  • Carlo Ancelotti’s side have since advanced to semi-finals of Champions League
  • Courtois is also targeting World Cup glory with Belgium later this year

Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois believes Barcelona’s 4-0 win over his team last month was a ‘fluke’.

Xavi’s side thrashed Real at the Bernabeu thanks to Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s brace and goals from Ronald Araujo and Ferran Torres.

But Courtois believes Barcelona’s win was merely a ‘fluke’ and insists their recent results show the loss against their fierce rivals was just down to a ‘very bad night’.

Speaking to Spanish outlet El Capitan via Marca, the 29-year-old said: ‘It was a very bad night, but we recovered quickly, because you shouldn’t have to think too much about defeats.

‘I’m disappointed, of course, but I think it was clear that there is a before and after that defeat.

‘If you look at our results and our performance it was a fluke.’

Since the El Clasico defeat, Real have won two league games and beaten Chelsea to advance to the semi-finals of the Champions League.

‘Whatever happens will happen but, it’s true, Belgium has one of the best teams in its history.’
