British tennis star Joe Salisbury claimed victory in the Monte Carlo Masters doubles final with American partner Rajeev Ram on Sunday.

Salisbury, the current World No 1 in men’s doubles and a four-time Grand Slam champion, saw off Robert Farah and Juan Sebastian Cabal 6-4, 3-6, 10-7 with the help of Ram.

It is the second ATP Masters title the pair have won together, following up on their Canadian Open triumph last year.

After taking the opening set, Salisbury and Ram’s form dipped as Farah and Cabal ramped up the pressure in a second which left the final in the balance.

But the top seeds soon regrouped to edge out a high-quality match tie-break in the third, which saw them break the Colombians twice to build up a healthy lead.

Ram then secured championship point at the third attempt to seal his first clay title with Salisbury.

The latter said in his on-court interview after the victory: ‘It’s a first title on clay together and it’s a surface that we thought was a weaker one for us. We worked well together.’

Ram then added: ‘I’ve got the best player in the world on my team – that helps.’

Salisbury and Ram will also be the top seed’s at next week’s Barcelona Open.
