A young woman was allegedly kidnapped by a man who forced her to drive him around, bashing her on the way, and then tried to run her over when she got out.

Nathan Campbell, 32, from the Newcastle suburb of Kotara, allegedly kidnapped the woman who is known to him on March 13 in nearby Lake Macquarie.

As she drove, he allegedly repeatedly assaulted her, including in the nearby suburb of Teralba where she escaped until Campbell allegedly dragged her back to the car.

They then continued on to Mayfield where the woman got out of the car again, getting the attention of bystanders.

The woman got out and alerted bystanders on Mulgrave Street in the Newcastle suburb of Mayfield (pictured) when the man then tried to run the group over but missed

As they tried to help the woman, Campbell allegedly got behind the wheel and tried to run the group over, though no one was hit, reports The Newcastle News.

Newcastle detectives searched for Campbell for a month before he was arrested and faced Newcastle Local Court on April 12.

He has been charged with three counts of common assault, driving a vehicle and menacing another with intent, taking or detaining a person with intent to obtain an advantage causing bodily harm, and assault causing bodily harm.

He has been refused bail to appear in the same court on June 7.
