Shameless legend looks UNRECOGNISABLE with wispy white hair and a full beard for new ITV drama Passenger – but can you guess who it is?

A Shameless legend looked unrecognisable in an image from new ITV drama Passenger.

The TV star sports wispy white hair and a full white beard in the new role, a far cry from how fans know him in the hit Channel 4 drama which ran for nine years.

First look images from Passenger show the actor donning an unbuttoned white tunic as he looks out into the distance with a fearful look on his face.

He joins a stellar cast in the upcoming dark comedy-thriller created by Andrew Buchan, with Wunmi Mosaku, Rowan Robinson, Barry Sloane and Daniel Ryan also appearing.

But can you guess who it is?

Yes, it’s David Threfall aka Frank Gallagher from Shameless!

The actor, 69, is of course known for playing the drunken layabout patriarch of the Gallagher family in the gritty Channel 4 show, which ran for 11 series from 2004 to 2013.

David’s character sported long greasy hair, a scruffy khaki Parka and stubble, and was rarely seen without a cigarette hanging out of his mouth or a can of beer in hand.

The TV series, which focused on single dad Frank and his several kids on Manchester’s Chatsworth council estate, launched the careers of stars including James McAvoy, Anne-Marie Duff and Maxine Peake.

The show, which also starred Rebecca Atkinson, Elliot Tittensor and Tina Malone, led to the spawning of a US version of the show.

A hit in America, the television series stars Hollywood A-list actor William H. Macy and actresses Emily Rossum and Amy Smart.

Away from Shameless, actor David has also acted in other TV roles including Funny Woman, Ricky Gervais’ dark comedy Afterlife, Troy and Charles Dickens’ adaptation Dodger.

While he’s also appeared on the big screen, with roles in films such as Nowhere Boy, Hot Fuzz and Black Sea opposite Jude Law.

However, his new role in Passenger is completely different, with his character, a fracking manager, finding himself blamed for a series of mysterious goings on in the town of Chadder Vale.

Written by Broadchurch star Andrew Buchan, Passenger follows ‘a close-knit community who are unwilling to face their fears of change, of outsiders and of the unknown.’

David joins Loki star Wunmi Mosaku as former Met Police Detective Riya Ajunwa, who’s job is to investigate the strange and eerie events in the town.

While David also reunites with Shameless co-star Sean Gilder, who played Paddy Maguire.

The synopsis for the new drama reads: ‘Riya arrived in decaying Chadder Vale five years ago and has since been searching for that ‘one big crime’, the challenge that will make her feel alive again.

‘Then one night local girl Katie Wells (Rowan Robinson) mysteriously disappears. The town barely has time to register her absence before she reappears the next day, apparently safe and sound.

‘The townsfolk ask few questions and normal life resumes. But for Riya, a relative outsider to the Chadder Vale way of life, none of this sits right.’
