Wrestling fans have expressed their shock after a clip emerged of a former WWE star performing at a show in front of a sparse crowd in a school gym.

Footage has emerged on social media of Alberto Del Rio being introduced to a crowd at a show.

The 46-year-old, whose real name is Jose A. Rodriguez Chucuan, was seen walking to the ring with only a handful of spectators in attendance in the small venue.

Fans were quick to comment on the ‘downfall’ of Del Rio, who had emerged as a WWE star between 2009 and 2014.

Del Rio had been the first Mexican-born WWE world champion, winning both the WWE Championship and World Heavyweight Championship on two occasions.

He also won the biggest ever Royal Rumble in 2011, before triumphing in the Money in the Bank ladder match in 2011.

Del Rio became the first professional wrestler to win both in the same calendar year.

‘This guy went from being at Wrestlemania and being WWE Champion multiple times to working high school gyms,’ one fan posted.

‘I remember I saw him perform live at a sold out Madison Square Garden for Survivor Series in 2011. Now he’s wrestling in a high school gym with 37 people. Talk about a fall from grace,’ another added.

‘It’s so sad. I was such a huge fan of his too,’ a third wrote.

Other fans had less sympathy for Del Rio, with the former WWE star having been plagued by controversy.

‘It’s his fault. His actions made him pay for the consequences,’ one fan claimed.

‘Only has himself to blame,’ another added.

Del Rio was fired by the WWE back in 2014 with the promotion citing ‘unprofessional conduct’, after the he reportedly slapped their social media manager Cody Barbierri.

He later claimed Barbierri had made a racist joke and slapped him after he refused to apologise.

Del Rio briefly returned to WWE between 2015 and 2016, but later featured on independent circuits.

In 2020, Del Rio was arrested and charged by police after being accused of beating and raping a woman, and threatening her child.

The charges were dropped in December 2021 after a witness failed to appear in court.

Del Rio had previously been investigated in connection with domestic battery in connection with a 2017 incident at Orlando International Airport involving his former girlfriend Paige, who’s also a pro wrestler. Paige told officers in the incident he didn’t lay a hand on her.

The 46-year-old has since wrestled for independent promotions, while he has also competed and commentated for UFC.
