The average salary for a credit trader is £183,740, according to employee review website Glassdoor.

However, because of Shah’s senior position at Citi, he was likely to have been on a far higher salary – possibly running to seven figures.

But the Bath University graduate was accused of stealing food from the canteen at Canary Wharf, London.

He declined to comment when contacted. Citi also declined to comment.
