What to wear this weekend: FEMAIL picks out the best puff sleeves for effortless style this season

  • FEMAIL’s Style Editor shared advice for embracing the puff sleeves trend
  • Dinah Van Tulleken said Valentino has led the seasonal trend on the catwalk
  • She suggests going for styles with a full skirt to exaggerate an hourglass figure

A STYLISH STATEMENT

Like so many trends, it started gradually. If you looked carefully a year ago, you might have

spotted the odd ruffle or a touch of eye-catching embellishment. Now statement sleeves are

adding excitement to the dullest of jumpers, shirts and dresses, and the best of the bunch is the puff sleeve.

THE BIGGER THE BETTER

Not sure which shape? Turn to the traditional Disney princesses for inspiration. Now, I have never harboured a fantasy of marrying in a princess costume, but I must say, I am quite taken with this little detail. It was big in autumn and it is proving even bigger as spring approaches, both in terms of popularity and, well, puffiness: inflated sleeves were seen on red carpets from Cannes to

Hollywood in awards season. And it’s not just for children — even us grown-ups can take on this philosophy. Check out Olivia Colman’s red, puff-sleeved gown at this year’s Golden Globes.

DRESS UP IN COMFORT

Valentino led the way on the catwalk, and Ganni has some gorgeous creations that are a bit more affordable. But if that’s still a stretch (and, let’s be honest, it is), turn to Topshop. The dress I’m wearing here is £49. Nothing clings, pulls or pinches. It feels like I’m wearing a sack, which I love. But the statement sleeves give the impression that I’ve made a much bigger effort than I actually have. Don’t limit yourself to dresses — puffs are on blouses, shirts and knitwear, too (see below).
