A luxury trainer brand’s latest £1,125 design – that features dripping glue and loose stitching – has renewed the row over glamorising poverty.

French fashion house Maison Margiela’s black Fusion Leather and Mesh Sneakers sparked backlash with critics claiming the design mocks people who can’t afford to buy new shoes.

The black sneakers are said to have a ‘deconstructed aesthetic’ and a description on matches Fashion claims they are ‘avant-garde’.

It read: ‘The Maison Margiela’s black Fusion trainers showcase the label’s penchant for creating avant-garde and instantly recognisable footwear silhouettes through their unmistakable deconstructed aesthetic.

‘They’re crafted in Italy from leather and mesh and feature carbon-fibre-effect details, glue drips and purposeful loose threads to further accentuate the design.’

The poverty row began in 2018 when Golden Goose released their ‘pre-distressed’ shoes – which were held together by tape.

And social media users have flocked to Twitter again as one decried ‘rich people’ for having ‘too much money for their own good.’
