Helen Mirren, 74, puts on a dazzling display in holographic black and silver ballgown


Her iconic acting career spans a whopping five decades and has netted her an Oscar, a BAFTA and a Golden Globe.

And Helen Mirren looked like Hollywood royalty as she attended her Homage and Honorary Golden Bear award ceremony during the 70th Berlinale International Film Festival on Thursday.

The Queen actress, 74, dazzled as she donned a black and silver ballgown adorned with holographic gems on one of the most special nights in her career.

The stunning gown teased a glimpse of the Prime Suspect star’s ample cleavage, covered by a sheer mesh overlay studded with crystals.

Adding extra sparkle, the gown boasted a metallic silver collar and sleeves before flaring out into an extravagant skirt.

The skirt was adorned with thousands of crystals, with the Red star boosting her height with black stiletto heels.

Earlier in the day Helen appeared in great spirits as she celebrated her Honorary Golden Bear and Homage award at a photocall at Germany’s Grand Hyatt Hotel.

The Woman In Gold actress put on an animated display as she took to the red carpet in her favourite Radiohead blazer, emblazoned with a Union Jack flag and the words ‘Karma Police’ – the name of the band’s 1997 hit single.

The thespian previously wore the bold jacket when she performed Freestyle Love Supreme alongside Freestyle Love Supreme on Broadway back in November. 

Helen, who has appeared in movies including The Madness of King George and The Last Station, received the honour for her contributions to the film industry. 

An award ceremony in celebration of her Honorary Golden Bear will be held on Thursday evening at the Berlinale Palast, and will feature a screening of one of her biggest film’s to date, Stephen Frears’ 2006 hit The Queen.   

On her achievement, Mariette Rissenbeek, Executive Director of the Berlinale, said: ‘Helen Mirren is a strong personality whose powerful portrayals are always impressive.

‘She surprises us time and again with her interpretation of complex characters – whether it’s Chris in Calendar Girls or Queen Elizabeth II in The Queen, her portrayals are a paradigm of strong women.

The Berlinale have honoured a series of Helen’s blockbuster films under their Homage category, including 1989’s The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover, last year’s The Good Liar, The Last Station from 2009, 1980 movie The Long Good Friday, and The Queen. 

This year’s festival, which showcases the best films of international cinema, kicked off on February 20 and is due to conclude on March 1.

The outing comes after she touched on speculation that BBC are planning to scrap its licence fee in favour of a Netflix-style subscription service. 

Speaking at the Kiln Theatre in Kilburn, North London, Helen told The Daily Mail: ‘I think that the licence fee has had its day. Possibly, I think it is on its way out.’

Last year, Dame Helen joined fellow stars Angela Rippon and Sir Lenny Henry in signing an open letter which called for the reinstatement of free TV licences for all over-75s.

Helen has been married to American filmmaker Taylor Hackford, who was the director of her 1985 film White Nights, since 1997.

The Cal star has been busy filming comedy drama The Duke alongside British actor Jim Broadbent.

The film is based on the true story of a British pensioner who, in 1961, was prosecuted for stealing Goya’s Portrait of the Duke of Wellington from London’s National Gallery in 1961.

Helen will be seen next on the big screen in the latest installment of the Fast & Furious franchise, F9, set for release on May 22.
