Police arrest BMW driver in his 30s after boy, eight, dies when car hits highway maintenance vehicle on motorway hard shoulder as another child, six, is left with serious injuries

A driver is being questioned on suspicion of drug-driving after an eight-year-old boy was killed in a motorway crash and a boy of six was seriously injured.

The two children were rushed to hospital on Friday after the silver BMW they were in hit a stationary highways maintenance vehicle on the hard shoulder of the M60, near junction 23 for Audenshaw, shortly after 2pm.

Greater Manchester Police said the eight-year-old boy was pronounced dead a short time later.

The driver of the BMW, a man in his 30s, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and drug-driving, the force said.

A woman in the maintenance vehicle suffered minor injuries.

Sergeant Matthew Picton of GMP’s Roads Policing Unit called for witnesses who saw the crash or had dashcam footage to come forward.

He said: ‘This is a tragic incident and our thoughts are with the boy’s family at this terrible time.

‘Our officers are currently piecing together the circumstances of the collision and we would appeal for anyone who witnessed it, or who may have dashcam footage, to get in touch as a matter of urgency.’
