A drunk and ‘rowdy’ woman punched paramedics and kicked a police officer as she caused bedlam at a hospital.

Fiona Sanders, from Sheldon, east Birmingham, first lashed out in the back of an ambulance and then continued flinging limbs out and shouting at NHS staff who tried to restrain her in a wheelchair.

The 38-year-old, admitted injuring four paramedics and one police officer in total, pleading guilty to five charges of common assault against emergency workers at Birmingham Magistrates’ Court.

Prosecutor Shahzad Imam said: ‘Paramedics were asked to go to a pharmacy on Coventry Road after a report of a woman who had fallen over and hit her head.

‘Paramedics arrived to examine her. She was intoxicated and there were signs of a cut to her nose.

‘They told her she needed to be taken to hospital to be examined. She was sat in the back of the ambulance. CCTV was put on due to concerns over her behaviour.

‘Whilst en-route she became loud and rowdy. She kept taking her seat belt off and the paramedics kept having to put it back on.

‘At some point the person hit one of the paramedics with her right hand to the top of the chest causing pain and discomfort.’

Mr Imam continued saying Sanders had to be put into a wheelchair at the hospital on Saturday, February 15, because of how intoxicated she was.

He added: ‘She was shouting in the waiting area. They were trying to book her in but she began kicking out her arms and legs. Several hospital staff tried to restrain her, three of them ended up being punched.

‘Police had to be called. Two officers arrived and tried to speak to her but she continued shouting.

‘She told officers to “f*** off”. At some point she kicked out at an officer causing pain to their right leg.’

Sanders was arrested and taken to Perry Barr station where she apologised for her actions.

‘She had had four large glasses of wine but can’t recall events after that,’ said Mr Imam.

‘She is sorry for what happened and said nothing like this has happened before.’

Magistrates were told Sanders ‘has a very serious issue with alcohol’.

Nothing further was said in her defence as she was referred to probation officers to prepare a full pre-sentence report.

The case was adjourned and Sanders will next appear at the same court on Tuesday, March 24 to learn her sentence.
