Last Tango In Halifax viewers go wild after Happy Valley’s Sergeant Catherine Cawood is mentioned

Last Tango In Halifax viewers go wild over a subtle reference to writer Sally Wainwright’s OTHER Yorkshire drama Happy Valley in last night’s episode (so, did YOU catch the mention?)

  • BBC drama Happy Valley was referenced in last night’s Last Tango In Halifax
  • PC Cheryl (Rachel Leskovac) mentioned a ‘Sergeant Cawood’ being on duty
  • Sergeant Catherine Cawood is Sarah Lancashire’s character in Happy Valley
  • Both Yorkshire dramas star Lancashire and are written by Sally Wainwright

Last Tango In Halifax creator Sally Wainwright delighted viewers by adding a subtle reference to her other hit BBC drama, Happy Valley, in last night’s episode.

PC Cheryl (Rachel Leskovac) mentioned Happy Valley’s lead character, Sergeant Catherine Cawood (Sarah Lancashire, who also stars in Last Tango In Halifax) in a heated exchange with sheep farmer Caroline (Nicola Walker) about local police.

After Caroline accused the police of not doing enough to crackdown on fly tippers and vandals, PC Cheryl responded: ‘It’s a good job it’s me on duty and not Sergeant Cawood cause she’d rip your spleen out through your nose for speaking to a police officer like that.’

Subtle mention: PC Cheryl (Rachel Leskovac), right, mentioned Happy Valley’s lead character, Sergeant Catherine Cawood (Sarah Lancashire, who also stars in Last Tango In Halifax) in a heated exchange with sheep farmer Caroline (Nicola Walker), left, about local police

The passing comment was picked up by super fans on social media, who noted that it could mean the dramas, both set in Yorkshire, take place in the same universe.

One tweeted: ‘I caught that Happy Valley reference there #LastTangoinHalifax.’

Another added: ‘Happy Valley was just referenced, wasn’t it? I’ll have to watch it again #LastTangoInHalifax.’

Some called for a crossover episode between the two dramas, although they noted it would be difficult given that Lancashire has a central role in both.

One viewer tweeted: ‘#lasttangoinhalifax and happy valley in the same universe – and now im gonna need sarah lancashire to do some sort of split screen scene with herself please.’

A second agreed: ‘OMG WELL DONE! Caroline in body and another Sarah Lancashire character mentioned (Happy Valley) can we have split screen acting please? #LastTangoInHalifax.’

The reference prompted calls from fans for another season of Happy Valley, especially as there is now just one more episode from this season of Last Tango In Halifax.

Lancashire has previously revealed that there is a third series on the cards but it is thought it will take place some time after the last series concluded.

Last Tango In Halifax continues on Sunday at 9pm on BBC1
