A motorist has been fined £300 after being caught in a van which was more than a ton overweight because he had stockpiled toilet roll. 

The driver was stopped by officers from the Driver and Vehicles Standards Agency at the Blackwall Tunnel in London today. 

He was found with a van-load of toilet roll, which people have been panic-buying amid the coronavirus crisis.

Shoppers across the world have been filmed stockpiling on toilet roll and fighting over packs in supermarkets amid coronavirus fears. 

The government last week urged calm as it emerged some supermarkets were warning of shortages of drugs, hand sanitiser and toilet roll.
