FABULOUS NOT FLASHY

Slithering into snake print is all well and good for rock stars and the fashion elite, but for the rest of us it may feel a little daunting. However, there are easy ways you can harness its slinky, slithery allure without looking over the top.

If you’re taking your lead from the catwalks, look for eye-catching colours. There were bright red snake trousers at Burberry, blue blazers at Roberto Cavalli, and Stand Studio sent a rainbow down the runway. If that all sounds a bit too much, turn to the traditional brown/black/ white combinations of earthy camouflage tones.

KICK OFF WITH A SHOE

Footwear is an easy place to start. Yves Saint Laurent’s kneehigh python boots were the thing to be seen in for autumn/winter, and now snake print is decorating everything from kitten-heeled court shoes to summer sandals. I love the outerwear, too. There’s an amazing selection of trench coats and jackets on the High Street, including the French Connection mac (£165) I’m wearing here.

TRY A TRIM

You don’t have to go head-to-toe, or too tight and trussed with this look. Try swapping your plain black or grey roll-neck for an animal print one and wear it under a basic knit, tailored shirt or easy dress. Bolder print trousers can be toned down with a smart blazer, or team a snake-print jacket with jeans. It’s all about the mix of comfy with something more exciting.

NO PYTHONS HARMED

Snake-patterned leather is pricey but looks gorgeous. Or if you’re on a budget, some of the cotton jersey print pieces are fabulous. unless you’re parting with thousands of pounds, no python will have been harmed in the making. Faux is very much the way to go.
