Catherine Tyldesley reveals she overhauled her diet so she can be in good health for her son

She famously shed six stone, dropping from a size 22 to a size 10.

But Catherine Tyldesly has revealed that her diet is no longer about weight loss since welcoming her son Alfie, four.

The former Coronation Street star, 36, has told how she overhauled her diet to ensure she’s in the best health as possible to be around for her son for as long as she can.

Changes: Catherine Tyldesly has revealed that her diet is no longer about weight loss since welcoming her son Alfie, four

The actress, who fronts new show Diet: Trust Your Gut? has explained how having more awareness of her gut health has changed her life, with the star having previously eaten a high-protein diet.

Following her appearance on ITV’s Tonight documentary in 2015, the actress learned what gut health products work best, adapting it to her everyday food intake.

She told The Mirror: ‘I feel more energised, mentally and physically, since becoming more plant-based. I feel a greater sense of vitality. And I enjoy food a lot more as I eat a wider range now and making all kinds of different recipes, rather than sticking to the same high-protein ones.’

And Catherine’s whole perspective on life changed after she welcomed her son Alfie, who turns five this week, with husband Tom Pitfield.

She explained: ‘Since I have had Alfie things are no longer about weight-loss, it is just about being on the planet for as long as possible. When you are busy working mum you can’t afford to get poorly. Children are unforgiving like that.’

She went on to say how important is is to ‘fuel your body correctly’, adding that one would not put ‘petrol in a diesel car’.

The TV personality also discussed her diet prior to her drastic changes and told how she was shocked to learn what she ate ‘lacked nutrients’, with a pal comparing her diet to that of a body builder.

She said: ‘I was a stickler for meat, meat, meat. At one point I was even eating steak for breakfast when I was doing a lot of weight training. I have a good friend who is a nutritionist and when I told him what I was eating he said, “Blimey, Cath, you’re not a bodybuilder”.

After learning her ‘microbes’ were not working as they should be, Catherine changed the way she ate, ditching the steak breakfast and eating a more plant-based diet of fruit, veg and whole grains.

Catherine’s diet overhaul discussion comes after she was left ‘gutted’ last month after being forced to pull out of the Strictly tour due to her fractured ankle.

Speaking of the injury during an interview on Lorraine,  she said: ‘I fractured my ankle while on the Strictly tour, so I didn’t get to do the last section. I was absolutely gutted. We left the competition too early, we would have loved to have been there longer…

‘And this was a second chance really, on the tour, and then I go and fracture my ankle like Mr Bean. But hey ho, it could have been worse – it’ll [the leg brace] be off soon. I’m healing really well, so it should be off in a couple of weeks.’

In her initial announcement, Catherine broke the news to fans on Instagram.

She penned: ‘I’m absolutely heartbroken to let you all know that I’ve had to finish my time on the @strictlycomedancinglive tour earlier than expected. Unfortunately I’ve sustained an injury which means I’ll be unable to dance for a while.

‘My experience of the tour has been a complete joy. Each audience has been so full of love for SCD. My fellow dancers are all phenomenal and I’m so grateful to have experienced such a magical show.

‘Devastated is an understatement. Wishing my #Strictly family the best time with the rest of the tour. If you get chance to watch it – GO! It’s unbelievably magical!’

When Lorraine asked if Catherine preferred the tour or the show, she said: ‘I did! There was no pressure, we all were having the best time because you’re doing the same dance every night, you genuinely improve…

‘So I had Shirley [Ballas], Bruno [Tonioli] and Craig [Revel-Horwood] coming up to me and going, ‘Oh my God the improvement!’ And that was so nice, to get that feedback.’

When asked if she will continue to dance, Catherine said: ‘Oh yes! Johannes [Radebe] can’t get away from me. Every time I’m in London, I’m like ‘Babe, teach me the waltz, let’s do the Paso!’
