Every top league in Europe except the Premier League have suspended matches in a bid to prevent the spread of the illness sweeping the world.

And now UEFA are following suit with the situation becoming untenable.

Juventus were scheduled to face Lyon next Tuesday but one of their players, Daniele Rugani, tested positive for coronavirus, meaning everyone he came into contact with including team-mates and staff must self-quarantine for 14 days.

Clearly this prevents them from playing and potentially spreading coronavirus, meaning UEFA have little choice but to suspend games.

Real Madrid were due to play Manchester City next Tuesday but the Spanish side are all in quarantine until at least March 27 after a club basketball player testing positive for COVID-19.

Manchester United’s game against LASK on Thursday night was initially going to be played behind closed doors and the club are reimbursing fans £350 who forked out to attend.

Now the match is not going to be played and an alternative time will have to be found for it to take place.

More than 800 people in Italy have died from coronavirus so far and the World Health Organisation has declared it a pandemic.

Every sphere of life is being affected by the illness and the sporting calendar is being thrown into chaos.
