China has ordered its citizens to wear face masks regularly in public as a precaution against the novel coronavirus.

Communities around the country have also set up checkpoints guarded with anti-coronavirus officers while millions are under lockdown.

This comes as China sees only eight new coronavirus cases today, which is the lowest since the outbreak started in January.

Beijing has ordered people arriving in the city from any country to go into 14-day quarantine as China reported an increase in imported coronavirus cases, threatening its progress against the epidemic.

China has made major strides in its battle against the virus, prompting President Xi Jinping to visit Wuhan, the central city at the heart of the global epidemic, on Tuesday and declare that it has ‘basically curbed’ the spread of the disease.

The virus has infected nearly 81,000 people in China so far, with a large majority having already recovered. The national death toll rose to 3,172 today.

The global death toll from the new coronavirus has passed 5,000 and the outbreak has spread to over 100 countries.

Europe is now the ‘epicentre’ of the coronavirus outbreak, the World Health Organisation said today, with makeshift hospitals springing up from Italy to Russia as panic spreads across the continent.

WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said Europe was reporting more daily cases than China did at the height of the outbreak there.
