Coronavirus Australia: Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson leave hospital

Tom Hanks and wife Rita Wilson have left hospital in Australia five days after announcing they had contracted coronavirus.

The A-list couple had been held in Gold Coast University Hospital, Queensland, after being diagnosed by health officials there.

They are both now said to be resting in a home they have rented to see out their isolation period. They will remain in quarantine there, People reports.

Hanks had shared updates of his recovery with fans on his Instagram page, telling them they were taking a ‘one-day-at-a-time approach’.

Forrest Gump actor Hanks and his wife, both 63, announced the positive test results on Instagram urging the public to ‘take care’.

The Oscar winner is filming an untitled Baz Luhrmann-directed Elvis Presley film produced by Warner Bros. Luhrmann and his family are also quarantined after the Australian director met with Hanks just a day before he tested positive to coronavirus

Filming was halted as a result of the diagnosis but Hanks was the only one on set who has tested positive.

He touched down in Gold Coast on January 26 for the film, which is still in pre-production meaning cameras have not started rolling yet.

Hanks revealed he and his wife experienced symptoms including the common cold, body aches and chills before they decided to get tested.

Before their diagnosis, the couple had visited crowded Australian hotspots including Bondi Beach and the Sydney Opera House – raising fears that others were infected.

‘People who have come in close contact with Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson will now need to self isolate and quarantine,’ the premier of Queensland had said.

‘Hello, folks. Rita and I are down here in Australia. We felt a bit tired, like we had colds, and some body aches. Rita had some chills that came and went. Slight fevers too. To play things right, as is needed in the world right now, we were tested for the Coronavirus, and were found to be positive,’ Hanks wrote last Wednesday.

‘Well, now. What to do next? The Medical Officials have protocols that must be followed. We Hanks’ will be tested, observed, and isolated for as long as public health and safety requires. Not much more to it than a one-day-at-a-time approach, no?’ Hanks wrote.

‘We’ll keep the world posted and updated. Take care of yourselves! Hanx!’

He shared a picture of what appears to be a medical waste basket and a latex glove in a hospital.

The following day he posted to social media, writing: ‘Hello folks. @ritawilson and I want to thank everyone here Down Under who are taking such good care of us.’

‘We have Covid-19 and are in isolation so we do not spread it to anyone else. There are those for whom it could lead to a very serious illness.

The two-time Academy Award winner said he and his wife ‘are taking it one-day-at-a-time’ amid the global health pandemic.

In an accompanying shot, Tom wore a sage green cap with a grey shirt, while Rita wore a grey mesh cap with a pink top.

He added: ‘There are things we can all do to get through this by following the advice of experts and taking care of ourselves and each other, no?’

Hanks then signed off by quoting his A League Of Their Own character Jimmy Dugan, saying, ‘Remember, despite all the current events, there is no crying in baseball.’

Rita shared the same shot, adding: ‘A little update below to all of you from@tomHanks and myself. So grateful for the outpouring of prayers, love and support. Means so much and strengthens us.’

He shared a picture of a tube of Vegemite, with a kangaroo toy holding the Australian flag nearby.

Hanks and Wilson married in 1988 and have four children together. In 2013, Hanks disclosed he has Type 2 diabetes.

Actor Idris Elba said Monday he too had tested positive.
