  • The deaths of 381 people were announced on Monday, plus 3,009 infections
  • Coronavirus symptoms: what are they and should you see a doctor?

The number of people in Scotland who have died after testing positive for COVID-19 has risen by 16, Nicola Sturgeon announced

Scotland today recorded 16 more deaths due to the coronavirus as the UK’s death toll jumped past 1,800.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon told Scottish Parliament the country’s COVID-19 death toll now stands at 76. It also declared 317 more cases, taking the number of infections to 2,310.

Wales, Northern Ireland and England have yet to record their daily COVID-19 figures yet – but hundreds more deaths and cases are expected.

Yesterday was Britain’s darkest day yet in the escalating crisis, with a record-breaking 381 deaths and 3,009 cases declared across the home nations.

It means the UK’s death toll has now jumped to 1,805 – the total stood at 1,789 last night. While the infection toll yesterday surpassed 25,000.

But the true size of the outbreak remains a mystery because of the UK’s controversial policy to only test patients in hospital – and not tens of thousands of Britons with mild symptoms still at home.

There have been 1,855 known fatalities when individual tallies from Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland are counted.

The Department of Health releases an official UK tally every afternoon that takes into account deaths recorded before 5pm the previous day.

It means that some of the deaths recorded by the devolved nations are added in to the next day’s count, leading to a total higher than the DOH announces.
