The Bachelorette's Clare Crawley says she wasn't calling out contestant Matt James

She seemed to suggest that The Bachelorette contestant Matt James was ‘in it for the wrong reasons.’

Now the show’s new star Clare Crawley is walking back that tweet from Saturday.

The 39-year-old hairstylist and reality star said she was talking about ‘MULTIPLE men’ in a tweet posted Sunday.

Clare’s original tweet shaded contestant ‘doing interviews and creating Cameo accounts before you are even on my season’ and said they were ‘in it for the wrong reasons.’

Many of her fans and followers instantly took them to mean Matt, who has given interviews and has a Cameo account, which allows people to pay to have celebrities record video messages to them.

But not everyone knew the reference, including the podcast host Olivia Caridi.

‘Who is he??? Y’all are acting like I’m supposed to be able to deduce this is about a certain person?’ she tweeted.

But Clare’s reply suggested she and others weren’t being expansive enough in their assumptions.

Could be anyone: She replied to one tweet claiming it was about ‘MULTIPLE men’ and just a ‘general thought’ she had

‘You weren’t supposed to deduce babe, it was about MULTIPLE men and a general thought I was having while we sit here in a real life crisis where someone’s (everyone’s) time + sincerity hold so much weight and value,’ she wrote.

‘Right, because there’s a bunch of guys who are doing interviews and cameos that are supposedly on your season,’ one fan replied. ‘I’m calling BS on this response. If I’m wrong, who are the men besides Matt?’

Former NFL player Dale Moss, 31, is the only other person from this season on Cameo. He hasn’t done interviews, but he did put on a cooking demonstration on Saturday for the Professional Athletes Foundation and NFL Players Association.

Matt seems to have responded to Clare’s original tweet in a short clip posted Saturday to his Instagram Stories.

‘For those of you who may have missed the message earlier this week, myself and Alex Bachman, my former teammate and current New York Giants wide receiver, pledged all of our Cameo earnings to the Robin Hood Foundation to fight this fight,’ he said while addressing the camera.

The Robin Hood Foundation is a New York–based charity battling poverty within the city.

The 28-year-old real estate agent currently charges $19 to film Cameo videos.

It didn’t take long for fans to realize we was referencing James, as he had recently done interviews about his charity work and had previously spoken about Crawley in interviews.

He is also friends with former Bachelorette contestant Tyler Cameron and even was on lockdown with him and former star Hannah Brown in Florida.

James already boasts 181k followers on Instagram where fans can often see Cameron and Brown featured.

Earlier in the week, James did an interview to promote a Fit-A-Thon live stream that raised money for Operation Food Fight.

Operation Food Fight was using the live stream to raise funds, to continue their work providing meals for healthcare workers during the pandemic.

Notable friends: James is also friends with former Bachelorette contestant Tyler Cameron and even was on lockdown with him and former star Hannah Brown in Florida

James also runs ABC Food Tours that provides food to those in need and aims to educate kids on food and nutrition.

Fans quickly responded to Crawley defending James against the accusations and many said he was their primary reason for tuning in.

‘I mean, Matt James is currently the ONLY pull to me for your season,’ one wrote, while another responded ‘SAAAAAAAME! And he has spoken SO WELL about her and said he was looking forward to meeting her.’

The same fan added: ‘She’s sabotaging her season.’

Fans of the franchise already seem to be fans of James with one saying ‘without Matt James…Cancel Clare’s season.’

‘Be careful Clare – you don’t want to bite the hand that is literally feeding kids in need,’ another added. ‘To have a season without Matt James would be tragic. He’s the real deal in every way.’

Clare’s season was halted in March, just two days after her suitors were revealed.

At age 39, Clare will be the oldest woman to become the Bachelorette.
