At the start of the interview, Joe brought on his little boy who was happily playing with the TV remote, despite Stacey getting him a toy one for his birthday.

The former EastEnders star spoke candidly about losing his beloved nan during the lockdown, meaning of a majority of her family were unable to attend the funeral.

He said: ‘We didn’t get to to say goodbye and the thought of my nan being on my own was really difficult, and the funeral, not everyone could come to to the funeral.

‘She was so important to us, she had 24 grand-kids. It’s such a shame if happened while the corona was going on, because it means you can’t really perform my nan’s last wishes.

‘It’s been really difficult, but you know I’m not the only one, other people can go through it as well.’

As Joe spoke about his nan’s death, it seemed little Rex was growing bored of waiting for his dad to finish talking on the telly, as he could be heard crying in the background.

Stacey feigned fury at seeing the chaos unfolding, jokingly saying: ‘I go out for a few hours!’

Luckily Joe was able to pass Rex off to one of his brothers Zachary, 12, or Leighton, eight, and went onto speak about he feels more comfortable talking about his mental health than when he and Stacey first met.

He said: ‘I’m not really the best person because I don’t talk a lot myself, I hold a lot in. I could take a leaf out of that book and try and open up a little bit. I think it’s difficult sometimes for certain people.

‘I’m so lucky, I’ve got Stacey, I’ve got a tight-knit family. I know if I need to talk about anything, they’re all there for me and I think, for me, that’s the most important thing. But yeah, I think I need to work on that on myself – be a little bit more open and talk openly. Stacey will tell you the same as well.’

Stacey replied: ‘You have got better since I met you. Definitely at the start of the relationship, I remember thinking, ”He is a closed book”, even though I could sense something wasn’t right, I just never knew what it was.’

Asked by Nadia Sawalha what Stacey did to help Joe open up, she added: ‘I don’t think I did anything to help… you grow and we’ve got four boys, they’re getting older and they need someone to talk to. They’re needing another male to talk to, but the way you deal with things emotionally has changed with the boys.’

Joe said: ‘Having the kids, with them all being boys, and of the age where they need to know things – they need to know emotions… It’s difficult, I’m having to be a lot more open, which is probably really healthy for me.’

During the interview, Joe and Stacey also chatted about their appearance on the new series of Celebrity Gogglebox, which begins on Friday.
