The Creative Arts Emmys to go virtual… and all three Governors Balls canceled due to COVID-19

The two Creative Arts Emmys ceremonies originally scheduled for September 12-13 at LA’s Microsoft Theatre will now be reimagined as an ‘innovative virtual event.’

Just like the Daytime Emmys, the Television Academy has decided to create a ‘new format’ to hand out trophies to behind-the-scenes crew and guest actors due to the coronavirus pandemic.

As a precaution over the spread of COVID-19, the Academy also announced Monday they’ve canceled all three Governors Balls after-party events for the first time ever.

‘This has been an incredibly challenging time for our industry; and though we are now making plans to get back to work, we know there are many still suffering from the work stoppage caused by the coronavirus,’ Television Academy Chairman and CEO Frank Scherma said in the press release.

‘As we strive to do the right thing for our community with these changes to our annual events, the Television Academy is also pleased to support those still in need with a $1M donation to The Actors Fund COVID-19 Relief Fund.

‘As the industry reemerges, we will continue to support our more than 24K members and our community through this donation and our Academy’s programs and resources.’

As of Monday, there have reportedly been 2.14M confirmed COVID cases in the United States leading to the deaths of 117K people.

Curiously, the Academy and ABC have not canceled the far more popular 72nd Primetime Emmy Awards ceremony, which is still scheduled for September 20 at LA’s Microsoft Theatre.

All Emmy nominations will be announced on July 28.
