Charlie Hunnam says he had COVID-19 ‘very early on’ and that he may have the virus again

Charlie Hunnam made a remote appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live on Friday evening to promote his latest project Jungleland.

And during the interview, the 40-year-old actor discussed contracting COVID-19 ‘very early on’ in the pandemic and how his experience with the virus was not particularly severe.

Hunnam also revealed that he is currently experiencing ‘a little bit of a persistent fever, a dry cough, a little bit of fatigue’ and that it ‘could’ be COVID-19 again.

‘I’m not sure what I have. I have a little bit of a persistent fever, a dry cough, a little bit of fatigue, so… it could be COVID,’ he explained.

But the Sons Of Anarchy star said that he ‘went and had a test earlier this week, a rapid test, and it came back negative.’ 

‘So I could just be unfairly jumping to conclusions. But it feels consistent.’

After joking about possibly being a ‘hypochondriac’ with Kimmel, Charlie opened up about his past coronavirus diagnosis and how it differs from his current sickness.

‘I had it earlier this year, and it didn’t feel like this,’ he admitted, before listing his prior symptoms.

‘It wasn’t particularly acute, I just lost my sense of taste and smell for about 10 days, and had a little bit of fatigue. This feels very, very different. This feels much more like flu.’

Hunnam explained to Kimmel that he caught the virus ‘very early on’ in the pandemic, so there was not a lot of information regarding its defining symptoms.

The virus’ infamous loss of ‘sense of taste and smell’ had not ‘really come to light as a symptom of mild COVID.’ 

Although he is unsure of just what his current ailment may be, Charlie said that he would be genuinely surprised if he happened to contract COVID-19 for a second time.

‘I don’t know how I would have gotten sick, again, because I have not left the house in six months, other than to take my new cat to the vet,’ he explained, adding that he and his partner recently ‘rescued this kitten.’ 

‘Whether I just have a cold or flu or something, the only time I’ve ever been in any sort of contact with the outside world was taking her to the vet, and it turns out what she has is feline coronavirus.’

Hunnam noted that the ‘delicious irony’ of him possibly contracting COVID-19 again is that he is a notorious ‘germaphobe’ and has always been one to constantly wash his hands, etc.

‘If there is something floating around, I’m gonna get it. And I think it’s because I am such a germaphobe! I just have a very weak immune system,’ he said.

Charlie’s latest film Jungleland, which was directed by Max Winkler, premieres on VOD and in select theaters next Tuesday.

The film centers around a ‘reluctant bare-knuckle boxer,’ played by Jack O’Connell, and ‘his manager brother,’ played by Hunnam, and their cross-country journey to partake in their final fight.

But the journey, as well as an ‘unexpected travel companion,’ unexpectedly ‘exposes the cracks in their bond.’
