‘It’s really rare to see in television or in work, where people genuinely care about you,’ Mai said. ‘But I can definitely say with DWTS and The Real, these people genuinely cared about my wellbeing and took care of me and supported me throughout my entire process of healing.

‘I have to thank The Real for being so understanding the entire step of the way. The Real truly is my family and they were just so encouraging and held it down for me for our daily talk show that made me feel so warmed and loved every day that I watched the ladies.’

She said, ‘Although I am grateful to be recovering safely, I can’t lie… I am devastated by the fact that my journey with #DWTS will end this way. Dancing on this show has been the most exhilarating adventure. I’ve gained both beautiful friendships and loving supporters.’

She subsequently appeared on DWTS in a clip from a hospital, in which she opened up the medical situation that lead to her leaving the program.

‘I found out that I have a throat abscess, where my tonsils and my throat had gotten so infected that it started permeating to the rest of the areas behind my neck and behind my ears,’ she said, ‘that I had to get emergency surgery which is why I’m here now.’
