Zara Holland’s boyfriend Elliott Love was branded ‘reckless’ as he avoided jail and escaped with a fine for breaching Barbados’ strict Covid laws.

Mr Love, who could have been jailed for up to a year, was fined just £3,000, which is £1,400 less than his famous girlfriend – despite him being prepared to get on a packed holiday jet while infected with the virus.

Wearing a blue shirt, beige chinos, a face mask and white trainers, he refused to comment as he left court.

Defense attorney Harry Husbands asked the court that Mr Love be treated differently from his famous girlfriend because he was a ‘simple guy’ who owned a small demolition company and worked for £450-a week.

The magistrate said Mr Love had been reckless since he had tested positive and had placed a taxi driver who drove him to the airport and his family’s life in danger.

It is believed he will follow girlfriend Miss Holland in leaving the island immediately having escaped more serious punishment.

The couple were arrested by police at Grantley Adams’ International Airport as they prepared to board a British Airways flight to the UK after discovering he had tested positive for Covid.

He was detained at the island’s Paragon Military Base, which has been turned into a coronavirus quarantine centre, while recovering from the virus.

Having recovered and been tested negative, Love was on Thursday questioned by police at Hastings Police Station.

Yesterday he pleaded guilty to a charge of breaking the island’s strict Covid laws. A date has not yet been set

Miss Holland, 25, faced the same charge on Wednesday and was fined £4,417.

Mr Love was spotted yesterday at Hastings Police Station yesterday wearing stripy shorts, a white shirt, a cap and a protective face mask.

Just 24 hours earlier his girlfriend jetted out of Barbados after her fine was paid to the court.

She was seen sitting alone before boarding a Virgin Atlantic flight to Manchester at the Grantley Adams International Airport, the same airport where she and Mr Love, 30, had been arrested.

Dressed in black leggings and top and white trainers, with her long blonde hair loose, she wore a mask as she kept far apart from the other passengers in the departure lounge.

Miss Holland had pleaded guilty to leaving her hotel while she was under quarantine and was ordered to pay a fine of £4,500. After the fine was paid, the Love Island star was free to leave

One fellow traveller said: ‘She was sitting well away from everyone else and trying to keep a very low profile. To say she looked sheepish is an understatement.

Meanwhile a family friend opened up to MailOnline about the couple’s situation, saying: ‘Zara and Elliott have been able to stay in touch with each other throughout this nightmare.’

‘They have been speaking on the phone and sending text messages. They are both very upset about what happened.’
