Martine McCutcheon reveals her Swan costume on The Masked Singer was ‘claustrophobic’

‘It was nice to be able to see and breathe again!’ Martine McCutcheon reveals her Swan costume on The Masked Singer was ‘claustrophobic’

Martine McCutcheon has said that her costume on The Masked Singer was ‘hot and claustrophobic’ and it was ‘nice to breathe again’ once she was unmasked.

The singer and actress, 44, was revealed to be behind the Swan costume in the most recent episode of the ITV series, with panellist Jonathan Ross correctly guessing her identify mere seconds before she took her mask off.

Martine surprised many fans of the show who had assumed that a member of the girl group Pussycat Dolls had been in the costume for the past few weeks, due to the fact that she had put on an American accent while in disguise.

Now she has revealed that her ‘spectacular’ costume was not always that comfortable underneath, and it even gave her back pain.

Speaking to The Mirror, Martine said: ‘The mask was more like a heavy wired sculpture and it weighed a ton. I couldn’t see anything so, yes, nerves were there.

‘I felt like I was just getting started and had just managed to stay stood up in my outfit. I’d have loved to have shown off my voice more but I also felt really relieved as I was so hot and claustrophobic.

The former EastEnders star added that the show’s secrecy is ‘taken very seriously’ and she felt it was ‘vital’ that she hid her natural speaking voice while in the costume.

In the latest episode of The Masked Singer, which was broadcast on Saturday, Martine found herself in the sing-off against Sausage, whose identity is yet to be revealed, and despite impressing with her rendition of Black Velvet by Alannah Myles, she was voted off by the judging panel.

Martine later shared her son Rafferty’s priceless reaction to her unveiling as the Swan character.

In the clip uploaded to social media, she was seen holding her five-year-old child while they watched the show and Martine chanted at her onscreen character: ‘Take it off!’

When she was finally unmasked, a shocked Rafferty said: ‘What? Mummy. Mummy, mummy! Oh my god.’

‘Can you believe it?’ she smiled and responded as her son affectionately wrapped his arms around her.

Rafferty added: ‘Mummy what the… how did you?’

She captioned the upload: ‘Thank you so much for having me! The most amazing project to be part of! Huge! Thank you to the whole team – what an brilliant bunch people to work with!

‘Ive never known an operation like it! I didn’t get to sing a big ballad but I DID get to be a showgirl again and also surprise Rafferty by being on one of his favourite ever shows!

‘Bless him he was so proud and not being able to breathe and getting backache from the huge heavy wired swan sculpture was all worth it! I can’t believe I managed to keep it a secret! (sic)’
