The retailer will be hoping The Ombles follow in the footsteps of previously hugely successful character Percy Pig.

The pig-shaped raspberry, strawberry, cherry, and grape-flavoured sweets were first launched in 1992, and the character is now used for a variety of different tasty treats.

The brand has also launched a range of other Percy Pig based products, including t-shirts and duvet covers.

Meanwhile Colin the Caterpillar could also prove inspiration for The Ombles, with the retailer selling more than 15 million of the chocolate roll since it was launched in 1990.

The news comes as M&S fans rejoiced at the supermarket bringing back its popular Love Sausage for Valentine’s Day.

The heart-shaped, chilli chorizo-style sausage, which comes wrapped in bacon, is available as part of a £30 Valentine’s hamper, alongside heart-shaped crumpets, tomatoes and a bottle of pre-mixed Bellini.
