  • Verian told she had nearly ‘given up’ on meeting someone before finding love

A couple who moved in together one week after meeting last year say they’d ‘nearly given up’ on the idea of finding love before getting married in December.

Phil, 74, and Verian, 61, from East Sussex, began chatting on an online dating site ahead of meeting in person for the first time in March 2020, just a week before the first national lockdown.

They decided to take the plunge and move in together, with Verian proposing to Phil two weeks later and marrying in a small ceremony before Christmas last year.

Appearing on Lorraine today, Verian called the timing of their relationship ‘unbelievable’ and said the pair would have faced ‘several miserable lockdowns’ had they not found love.

‘We had to know within a week,’ said Verian. ‘Because we had to start to live together because of the impending lockdown.

‘I think we were extremely surprised,’ she added. ‘I think we were both nearly giving up on dating and the idea of not meeting anyone.

‘I think we’re still getting used to it, I like saying “My husband”.’

Three weeks after meeting, Verian popped the question to Phil, who was ‘shocked but pleased’ and quickly fished out an old ring hidden away in his sock drawer to give to his new fiancée.

‘I felt I should wait to at least three weeks after we met each other,’ said Verian. ‘So I timed it to a minute after midnight. Philip was shocked but pleased and he went upstairs and found a ring.’

Phil added: ‘We were supposed to get married in November but of course, that got cancelled, and we had the choice of before Christmas or the New Year and we made the right choice!’.

The couple predicted the pandemic could have been far worse had they not met each other, with Phil revealing that his pet dog – his ‘only companion’ before meeting Verian – passed away in August.

‘I think it would have been several miserable lockdowns, said Verian, ‘It’s just unbelievable the timing really.’

The couple will celebrate their first Valentine's Day together this weekend, and plan to have a nice meal with champagne from their wedding before 'dancing around the sitting room'

Phil added: ‘My dog passed away in August and I don’t know what I would have done after that, he was my only companion until I met Verian’.

‘Philip is going to make me breakfast in bed for the first time ever’, said Verian, ‘We’re putting some champagne, given to us at our wedding, on ice.

‘We’re going to have a nice meal at the dining table, not slouched out in front of the telly, and then we’ll put on some music and dance around the sitting room’.
