Fergie’s comments come hours after Prince William, 38, shared a rare personal tweet expressing his gratitude to the medical team last night.

The Duke of Cambridge, the president of the Football Association, took to Twitter to express his relief at Eriksen’s improved condition, and to hail the calm thinking of both referee Anthony Taylor and the medics.

He tweeted: ‘Encouraging news about Christian Eriksen, we are all thinking about him and his family.

‘Well done to the medical team and Anthony Taylor for their calm and swift action. W.’

Prince William is president of the Football Association (FA) and took over the role from his uncle, the Duke of York, in 2006.

The Duke has taken a keen interest in all aspects of the game, including his support for the men’s and women’s national teams.

The match was halted after Eriksen’s collapse, before both sets of players agreed to return to the pitch and complete the fixture, which Finland eventually won 1-0.

Peter Moller of the Danish Football Association revealed that the Danish players agreed to restart their match against Finland after speaking to Eriksen and being assured his condition was stable.

‘We have been in contact with him [Eriksen] and the players have spoken to Christian. He is doing well and they are playing the match for Christian.’ Moller told Danmarks Radio.

Romelu Lukaku, a team-mate of Eriksen at Inter Milan, dedicated his goal for Belgium against Russia to the midfielder as he sent his country on their way to a 3-0 win in their Euros opener.

After scoring, he ran to the cameras and shouted, ‘Chris, Chris I love you!.’
