Coco Gauff, 17, falls to Germany’s Angelique Kerber in straight sets to become the last US woman eliminated from Wimbledon’s singles draw

  • Seventeen-year-old tennis sensation Coco Gauff was eliminated from Wimbledon in two sets (4-6, 4-6) by Germany ‘s Angelique Kerber on Monday
  • Gauff nearly took each of the first two sets, but was no match for Keber’s serve 
  • Gauff was making her first appearance in the fourth round at Wimbledon after beating Francesca Jones, Elena Vesnina, and Kaja Juvan, all in straight sets 
  • Led by Serena Williams, who was forced to retire from her first-round match due to an injury, all of the US women have been eliminated from the singles draw 

Seventeen-year-old tennis sensation Coco Gauff was eliminated from Wimbledon in two sets by Germany’s Angelique Kerber on Monday, leaving the tournament without any American women remaining in the singles draw.

Although the 20th-ranked Gauff nearly took each of the first two sets, she was no match for Keber’s serve during the 4-6, 4-6 defeat. The 25th-ranked Kerber won 67 percent of the points off her first serve and a remarkable 69 percent off her second compared to just 57 and 56 percent for Gauff, respectively.

Gauff was making her first appearance in the fourth round at Wimbledon after beating Francesca Jones, Elena Vesnina, and Kaja Juvan, all in straight sets, over the first three rounds.

Her exit marks the end of a poor performance for the US women at Wimbledon. Coco Vandeweghe, Amanda Anisimova, Alison Riske, Jessica Pegula, Sloane Stephens, and Venus Williams were all eliminated over the first two rounds, while Serena Williams was forced to retire in her opening match at Wimbledon due to injury. America Madison Keys also fell in the fourth round.  

‘I have to say Coco is such a great talented young player, she has such a great future in front of her. I am really sure she will have a great career.

‘She will play here so many times and maybe she will one day win the title.

‘I really enjoy my time here, the fans give me the energy to play my best tennis and I am really looking forward to my next match, this is such a magic place for me.’

Gauff and her doubles partner Caty McNally are still alive, and will play Russia’s Veronika Kudermetova and Elena Vesnina in the third round.
