Harry Maguire will lead Manchester United players’ public fight-back on Saturday after the crisis club’s week from hell.

The United skipper is scheduled to be grilled by broadcasters ahead of the crunch game at Tottenham, the club’s first outing since Sunday’s humiliating 5-0 loss at home to Liverpool.

Pre-match duties are generally shared between the squad – but this weekend Maguire is putting himself in the line of fire to face uncomfortable questions regarding the state of the club under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The United boss is in danger of losing his job following a disappointing start to the season and will speak at his pre-match briefing on Friday.

There has been some concern within broadcasting circles as to who would face the cameras given the manner of the loss to Liverpool, but skipper Maguire is scheduled to step in.

The England defender drew criticism on social media for his TV interview after the loss to Jurgen Klopp’s side in which he said: ‘I’m only here because I have to be.’ The remarks appeared to suggest he did not want to conduct the interview. But it is understood Maguire was trying to convey that it was his duty to address the supporters.

Sources have indicated Maguire volunteered for the interview after the match and sought out the cameras himself.

There is a feeling Maguire may still be suffering the effects of a recent calf injury – with performances questioned – although there is a reluctance to admit that publicly.

Last night the skipper told the club website: ‘It’s been a tough week obviously, you can’t just brush these things aside.

‘To lose in the manner that we did was so disappointing.’
