Joanne Hegarty: All that glitters… isn’t for me

A beautiful, versatile sequined piece. Dress, £475, rixo.co.uk

The simple task of choosing a new pair of white trainers recently made me realise how difficult it is to truly own your personal style.

In this frenetic world, people often try to glitter and sticker me – and I really have to stand my ground. Like with those trainers. At a press event to launch a new range, the brand’s designer asked me and a few others to choose a pair and decorate them as we saw fit.

My selection – a simple white pair that would go beautifully with my tailored wool trousers – delighted me but wasn’t too popular with everyone else. It meant I had to turn down the glittery Cinderella-esque ones, the bright laces on offer and the chance to add an inspiring quote across my sole.

In a room full of ‘maximum’, I felt under pressure to conform. But more and more over recent years, I’ve forsaken fuss and frills in favour of a minimalist approach to dressing: buying less and buying better – investing in pieces that will go the distance. To maximalists it might be boring but in my eyes, less really is more.

And not everything needs to be drenched in glitter to shine – although I do make one big exception: I love a sequin for party season. My love affair begins early November.

I’m hoping that this year we’ll all have more invitations to enjoy after 2020’s grim trudge from kitchen to living room. So how does a minimalist dresser like me tackle this time of year when sparkle is de rigueur? Here are my top tips…

1 From micro to major sparkles, the optimistic glimmer of sequins in the shape of dresses, tops, skirts and trousers can be embraced all over again this season. My favourite is a simple sequin in its purest form – in either white, black or gold.

2 For a simple but effective party look, team and contrast a white blazer with dark leather trousers and favourite heels. Add a touch of dazzle with glittering accessories such as a sequined handbag or diamanté jewellery or shoes.

3 A minimalist shift dress teamed with knee-high boots is a winner. For a festive twist, accessorize with a bolt of gold.

4 A top with a sheer sleeve or neckline will add sensuality and look party ready when paired with high-waist trousers.

5 Finally, this year I’ll be succumbing to the allure of feathers. Think Amal Clooney’s knockout plumed look at this month’s London Film Festival – OK, maybe not as fancy as that, but you get the idea of how good a feathered friend can look.
