Ole Gunnar Solskjaer insists Manchester United have moved on from the humiliation of a 5-0 thrashing against Liverpool two weeks ago as they meet Manchester City at home on Saturday.
Former United favourites Rio Ferdinand and Paul Scholes have warned that United could face further embarrassment against Pep Guardiola’s team, but Solskjaer believes his players are in good spirits after winning away at Tottenham and snatching a late draw at Atalanta in midweek.
Reminded of what he called his ‘darkest day’ in football against Liverpool – a result that put his job in jeopardy – Solskjaer said: ‘We’ve moved on from Liverpool. It’s a dark moment in our careers, but we’ve had a good two weeks. You don’t expect an easy ride when you become manager of Man United, that’s how it is.

‘When I stepped in the doors here in December 2018, three years ago, there’s been speculation ever since. That’s no problem.
‘We’ve moved on from that one. Of course, it’s going to be in the history books, but we’ve had a good week with good results away from home.
‘We’ve got to go into this game believing we can do good things. It’s a local derby and everyone knows what’s at stake.’
Solskjaer has a good record against City since taking over from Jose Mourinho, winning four and drawing one of the clubs’ eight encounters – including a 2-0 win over City at the last Old Trafford derby to be played in front of fans in March 2020.

‘I’m not one to talk about what I’ve done,’ added Solskjaer. ‘I’ve got great respect and admiration for Pep and what he’s done. We’ve had some good results and tight games, we need another performance like this.
‘Sometimes you need luck. We know this game we have to suffer a lot but we have to believe and trust ourselves because we’re at home and have had a couple of good results.
‘It’s a special one. The last time we had a Manchester derby with fans in the stadium the atmosphere was electric, everyone will still remember that one more than dark moments we had.
‘When Scott (McTominay) scored that goal in the extra-time it was a special moment. It’s a one-off game, and we have to be ready because a lot depends on who gets on the front foot.’
