  • But Old Trafford outfit are set to make a permanent appointment in the summer
  • Teddy Sheringham has backed a move for PSG manager Mauricio Pochettino
  • Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers should also be a target according to ex-striker

Former Manchester United striker Teddy Sheringham believes Mauricio Pochettino or Brendan Rodgers would be ideal to become Manchester United’s new permanent manager.

Having sacked Ole Gunnar Solskjaer last month after three trophyless seasons, the Red Devils have since appointed Ralf Rangnick on an interim basis until the end of the current campaign.

That leaves a potential new appointment in the summer and Sheringham, who scored 46 goals in 153 games for the club between 1997 and 2001, believes former Tottenham chief and current Paris Saint-Germain manager Pochettino as well as Leicester City boss Rodgers should be his former club’s main targets.

Sheringham also believes United should be keeping tabs on Leicester City chief Brendan Rodgers

‘I think Mauricio Pochettino or Brendan Rodgers would be quite perfect for the job,’ Sheringham told the MEN.

‘Rodgers is very calm in the way that he works things for his football teams, he gets results, he wins things, he won the FA Cup last year, so he’ll be delighted with that.

‘But also the way Pochettino plays his football, the way he dictates a lot of games. He takes the game to the opposition. His teams play with an identity that you want from a manager.

‘You want to know how you’re going to play a game. You can see what he’s trying to work at. And I think, you know, he has that demeanour that would make him an ideal candidate for the Manchester United job as well.’

Rangnick is expected to resume a role higher up at the club after six months as interim on the touchline, and United had tried to land Pochettino before they turned to the German for a short term move.

PSG however rebuffed the approach for the Argentine who has guided the French giants into the last-16 of the Champions League and has them 13 points clear at the top of Ligue 1.

Pochettino also enjoyed relative success at Spurs where during his five year stay he guided them to a runners-up finish in the Premier League as well as a Champions League final.
