Matthew McConaughey explains decision to not run for governor of Texas while promoting Sing 2

Matthew McConaughey explained his decision to not run for governor in his home state of Texas during a visit Tuesday on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.

The 52-year-old actor while promoting his new movie Sing 2 was asked by Jimmy, 47, to elaborate on his decision to stay out of the gubernatorial race.

‘Whew! Well, it was a two-year consideration that I came to the decision really over the last couple of months,’ Matthew said.

‘And I was asking myself the original question and trying to answer, ”How and where and what can I do to be most useful to myself, to my family and to the most amount of people?”,’ he said.

The category of politics arose and Matthew said it was a ‘privileged one’ that he gave ‘great consideration’.

‘But at this point in my life with the things, I’ve got a 13-year-old, an 11-year-old, an 8-year-old. The life I’m living right now, the storytelling I want to keep doing. It’s not the category for me at this point in my life,’ Matthew added referencing his children with wife Camila Alves, 39.

‘It’s still not ruling out future?,’ Jimmy asked.

‘I’m not until I am,’ Matthew replied.

‘Okay,’ Jimmy said.

The actor while considering politics never stated whether he would run as a Democrat, Republican or independent, and instead described his politics as ‘aggressively centrist’. 

He also never outlined any policy priorities, although he has been known for his activism on behalf of the environment and young people. 

Matthew also recounted how his foundation pivoted to disaster relief following Winter Storm Uri that hit Texas hard in February.

He and Camila immediately got on the phone seeking donations and they went down to Texas and hosted a show that raised over $7.7 million for disaster relief.

Jimmy congratulated Matthew for being named last month as Philanthropist of the Year by The Hollywood Reporter.

‘There is ways to serve ourself and serve others at the same time. And where those two meet, when we’re filling our bank account and our souls account at the same time, we’re getting the quantity and the quality at the same time,’ Matthew said.

The actor voices the character Buster Moon in Sing 2 that also features Scarlett Johansson, Reese Witherspoon, Nick Kroll, Tori Kelly, Nick Offerman and U2 lead singer Bono.

Sing 2 follows Buster Moon and his troupe as they plan to perform in Redshore City to put on a show for a media mogul while working to enlist a legendary rock star to perform with them.

‘It’s about chasing the dream, but also how do you get it. The hustle you gotta have, the dealing with rejection, which is part of it. All the doubt, can you believe your way through the doubt? And it’s fun, there’s something for everyone to sing,’ Matthew said.

The computer-animated jukebox musical comedy will be released in theaters on December 22.
