Roy Keane uploaded a hilarious Instagram birthday tribute to his ‘first wife’ Theresa on Wednesday – by making the post all about himself.

The former Manchester United captain put up an image of him and his wife as part of the post, but cropped half of her body out of the picture leaving just the retired Irish footballer staring at the camera.

The reference to Theresa as his ‘first wife’ – even though the pair have been happily married for nearly 25 years – was deemed hilarious by his 1.9million Instagram followers, which include fellow Sky Sports pundits Gary Neville, Jamie Carragher and Micah Richards.

All three former footballers, who work alongside Keane for Sky Sports, all responded with laughing emojis as the post went viral.

The normally candid Keane opened up his life to the world by joining Instagram earlier this year and fans have enjoyed his funny posts on social media.

The uploads include images of him getting drunk on international duty with Ireland along with more upbeat photographs with him and his family. Keane and his wife Theresa have been married since 1997 and have five children together.

Earlier this year, Keane opened up about how he got onto Instagram, revealing that his teenage daughter convinced him to join the popular social media website.

Keane said: ‘My youngest daughter, she goes “Listen Dad, we’re in lockdown, can you do do it for a laugh?”

‘Sitting at the kitchen table with my 16-year-old daughter and I said “Come on yeah, let’s do it for a laugh,” for a bit of fun.

‘It’s my daughter, but I’ve met people who have said to me, “Who’s your team? Where’s your team based?” and I went, ‘Where’s my team?’ as if I have a team.

‘And I thought “Well I have a team based in New York and London, working.” It’s me and my 16-year-old daughter, she’s Chief Executive. Well we say manage it, f*** off like, “Can we do a picture, let’s do a picture today,” is that managing it?’

The situation is different, however, with other people taking photographs of Keane, who  admitted in an interview with Gary Neville on his Overlap YouTube channel that does not like fans coming up to him and asking him for pictures of him.

Keane admitted in an interview earlier this year that he does not like being in the public eye

‘Being in the public eye, I detest it,’ he said earlier this year. ‘I hate it. People can be polite or stick a phone (up) and following you with a camera and then people think you’re rude. I’m the rude one and you’re coming up?

‘I bumped into a United fan the other day and he showed me his tattoo and he said “Alright, bye” and then walked on. That’s a proper fan. People who invade you with your phone or (signing) your jerseys, you’re just annoying.

‘I think it’s because people are busy and they see you as someone in the public eye and it’s like “can I have a piece of you?” or “can you sign that?” Even City fans come up and want a photograph. You want a photograph of me? Why?

‘To me it’s a busyness thing. It’s not a respect thing. People who respect you leave you alone.’
