Antonio Conte calls for Tottenham to remain calm and insists his side still need to ‘improve A LOT’ despite successive dramatic late Premier League wins boosting their Champions League hopes

  • Tottenham face third-placed rivals Chelsea in the Premier League on Sunday
  • Spurs sit eight points behind the Blues after two dramatic late league wins
  • Last-gasp wins over Leicester and Watford have boosted Spurs into fifth place
  • But Antonio Conte insisted his side need to be realistic and go ‘game by game’

Antonio Conte has called for calm after the successive dramatic late Premier League wins that have boosted Tottenham’s Champions League aspirations.

Spurs trail their opponents on Sunday, third-placed Chelsea, by eight points but have four games in hand, raising the prospect that they should be targeting higher than fourth.

Conte said: ‘You have to be very calm and go game by game. Don’t forget we won against Watford in the last minute, we won against Leicester in the last minute.

‘It is a pleasure to see my team fight until the end but if you cut four points off our table and then maybe you don’t make this question to me.

‘It is important to be realistic and understand it will be very difficult for us this season.

‘I don’t change my idea because of some positive results. We need to improve a lot.’

Conte is hoping to improve his squad with the capture of Adama Traore, with talks ongoing and Wolves holding out for £20m after rejecting a £15m offer.

In the meantime he is trying to squeeze every last drop out of his current group and believes last-gasp wins like the one at Leicester, when they scored twice in injury time, and Watford will help.

‘In these two last games we showed a great resilience, great will, a great desire to fight until the end, to believe you can win until the end and this is very important for the mentality, for the belief of the players, for what we are doing in this period, for the work we are doing together,’ Conte said.

‘You must be very good to believe and I’ve seen this in my players.’
