Tottenham are attempting to hijack Aston Villa’s bid for Juventus midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur.

After being rebuffed 24 hours earlier in an attempt to take the Uruguay international on loan, Tottenham returned with a £25million offer, £3m more than Villa’s last bid which was rejected.

Juventus want the cash so that they can push through a move for Borussia Monchengladbach’s Denis Zakaria and are keen to reach a swift agreement.

Tottenham had hoped to clear Tanguy Ndombele off their wage bill but his move to PSG has stalled though Everton, Valencia and Bayer Leverkusen remain interested.

Discussions are continuing with Juventus too for Swedish winger Dejan Kulusevski but that deal would be a loan with £832,000 fee plus option to buy at £25m.

Tottenham have also been considering a £32m offer Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz but that would be shelved if they progress with Bentancur. Villa are reluctant to sell regardless.
