Joanne Hegarty: And now for a wardrobe magic trick!

Simple additions such as a brass button or a red lip can update navy and denim. Coat, Valentino. Jeans, Frame. Jumper, Uniqlo

A good friend of mine left for Australia this week to start a new job and a new life. Sometimes things in a big city can feel quite transient and relationships you’ve invested in for a long time can disappear practically overnight.

Of course, my friend and I will stay in touch – but, realistically, things won’t be the same. We won’t be able to pop out for a quick coffee to put the world to rights. Or celebrate birthdays at a favourite restaurant or play tennis badly.

I guess that in this way fashion, with its never-ending cycle of trends, is rather like life – full of cherished things that are here one day, gone the next.

Update your favourite denims by teaming with chunky shoes

Which got me thinking about how we can update our wardrobes for spring while still embracing steadfast old friends such as your best-fitting pair of jeans or go-to bag or blazer.

The answer is to make them look fresh and current by adding a new-season twist. Here are my top tips…

Update your favourite blue denims by teaming them with a pair of chunky-soled shoes.

Give your trustiest handbag a reboot by adding a silky scarf in a different colour or pattern to its handle or strap.

Got a staple coat? Then switch it up in an instant by accessorising it with a hat – bucket styles are particularly chic this spring.

While the classic button-up shirt always looks stylish, to freshen it up opt for a crisp white or blue one with extra details such as billowing statement sleeves. Or for a shot of vibrant joy, try a sherbet-coloured silky one.

Once seen as something to keep granny snug, the cardigan is now a key part of our trans-seasonal wardrobes. This spring, go pretty by wearing it with a midi dress or give it edge by teaming with tailored trousers. And, of course, popped inside a tote, the cardigan is perfect for an extra precautionary layer on an evening out.

The knitted dress has become an everyday staple – I found the perfect black fluted-sleeve one in Cos and have being wearing it with glee on chilly afternoons. For spring, give it a new spin with lightweight versions in both muted and bright shades.

Lastly, for the easiest style twist, hook a new-season bag over your arm. In a bright hue or bold print, a bag is a simple way to make a joyful spring statement without breaking the bank.
