Arsenal have removed a message appearing on their online club shop, which appeared to troll rival Tottenham over their lack of silverware.

When viewing the user’s basket, a message read: ‘Your basket is empty as Tottenham’s trophy cabinet’, much to the surprise and delight of Arsenal fans.

The message has now been removed, however Arsenal fans enjoyed the joke while it lasted.

The hidden message quickly became well known on social media, after one Twitter user tweeted out a screenshot of the website.

However Arsenal were quite to delete the online prompt, after releasing a statement saying:  ‘This was posted to the site in error without appropriate checks and approvals and is being removed as quickly as possible.’

Tottenham are often mocked for their lack of silverware, having lost four finals since their 2008 League Cup victory over Chelsea.

This is not the first time Tottenham have been teased over a lack of silverware on social media, with one of Spurs’ official sponsors – Dulux – jokingly offered to sell the club’s “unused trophy cabinet” last year.

The company suggested that their dog mascot could do a better job at centre-back than Tottenham’s defenders.

Dulux later apologised. “We’re deeply sorry for the posts from Dulux this morning in response to the announcement of our relationships with Spurs,” said the company.
