KKR founders in line for bumper pay day after stellar year for US private equity firms

Two of Wall Street’s biggest private equity names have received a bumper payout after a stellar year for the industry in 2021.

Henry Kravis and George Roberts, who co-founded KKR, one of private equity’s most ferocious firms, each earned over £80million last year.

The annual report showed they pocketed £50million from carried interest and a further £30million from dividends as a result of owning 10 per cent of shares.

KKR was founded in 1976 and became famous when it bought conglomerate RJR Nabisco for £30billion, in what was then the largest buyout in history and inspired the feature film Barbarians at the Gate.

Kravis and Roberts stepped down as co-chief executives in October.

But their earnings were far less than Stephen Schwarzman at Blackstone who received a record £820million payout last year.
