A restaurant owner has slammed a couple who ordered the ‘most expensive food and wine’ on the menu – before leaving without paying their £80 bill.

Sergio Murtas, from Guisborough, took to Facebook to explain how the pair had dined in his restaurant Sergio’s last weekend before dashing off without paying.

He said: ‘For the couple that racked up an £80 bill at 7pm tonight and then just left; we have you on CCTV and will get the police involved, in the case that you do not come back and settle this bill as soon as possible.’

However other social media users are now saying the restaurant on Chaloner Street should ‘name and shame’ the couple by posting the footage of the pair.

Sergio told Teesside Live the restaurant was giving the couple more time to come forward before contacting the police.

He explained he had yet to hear back from the pair, adding: ‘They weren’t regulars and they did order the most expensive food and wine on our menu, therefore we thought it was deliberate.’

‘They did order king scallops as starter, fillet steak and a bottle of one of our best white wines and another couple of drinks.’

A similar incident had only happened once before in the 10 years the restaurant has been open in Guisborough, he added.

However he said he hoped to give the couple the ‘benefit of the doubt’ to come forward before getting the police involved.

Social media users on Facebook voiced their disgust at the couple.

‘Some people have the cheek of the devil,’ one person wrote, ‘don’t understand how they have the audacity to just get up and leave without paying.’

‘It’s terrible,’ another added, ‘don’t eat out if you can’t afford it. Businesses are struggling just the same as individuals.

A third person said: ‘Seems the OTHER crime they committed was pairing Fillet with white wine’.

While others had some critique for Sergio’s itself, saying the restaurant should make customers pay beforehand.

One person said: ‘When are restaurants going to learn and make people pay when they order? It’s not difficult.’
