Police and the NRL ‘are looking at MORE footage of alleged fight between teammates Payne Haas and Albert Kelly’ as code widens its investigation

  • Police and governing body are now examining additional footage of incident
  • Brisbane stars face possible fines and/or suspensions as a result of alleged clash

NSW Police and the NRL are investigating more footage of the alleged fight between Brisbane Broncos teammates Payne Haas and Albert Kelly, it has been reported.

Haas was filmed allegedly striking Kelly with his left fist after calling him a ‘f***ing c***’ then pushing him away forcefully with his right hand on March 20.

The altercation allegedly stemmed from Haas taking offence at Kelly stepping on his sneakers, before asking his teammate: ‘Why would I step on your shoes?’

The police and NRL’s Integrity Unit were originally looking at a brief piece of footage taken outside the hotel the Broncos were staying in after their round two win over the Bulldogs in Sydney.

Now Fox Sports has reported that police and the NRL are also examining additional video from the hotel and are broadening their enquiries.

The alleged clash is claimed to have kicked off after Kelly stepped on Haas' sneakers. The Broncos have been in poor form ever since

Haas and Kelly were believed to be in line for fines rather than suspensions as a result of the incident, but it remains unclear what, if any, effect the new footage will have on whether they’re penalised.

Haas – a devout Muslim who observes Ramadan – has reportedly told club bosses he wasn’t drinking alcohol on the night in question.

However, the Broncos prop is currently on a two-year good behaviour bond after being found guilty of intimidating police officers at Tweed Heads on the far north coast of NSW in February last year.

That act also saw him cop a three-match ban and $50,000 fine from the NRL.

He was also suspended for four matches and fined $20,000 for failing to cooperate with an NRL Integrity Unit investigation in 2019.

Kelly is currently facing a stint on the sidelines after suffering a potentially serious foot injury in Brisbane’s loss to the New Zealand Warriors last Saturday.

The altercation comes at a delicate time for the Red Hill club, who have been struggling badly since the alleged altercation between the pair.

Last week the Broncos suffered a 38-12 beating by the Cowboys at Suncorp Stadium, followed by a lacklustre 20-6 loss to the Warriors.

Brisbane are no strangers to clashes between teammates, either.

Prop Tom Flegler left Jordan Riki needing stitches to his face in September last year when he punched him after a Mad Monday celebration got out of control.

Former Brisbane prop Matt Lodge punched ex-Bronco Jack Bird several times when another team bonding session got out of hand in 2019.
