A former Bake Off contestant has caused a culinary stir on social media – after sharing a snap of the unusual way his friend enjoys Weetabix.

Tenth series baker Michael Chakraverty posted a photograph of a quartet of the cereal biscuits covered in butter and served up in a bowl, saying: ‘This week I discovered a friend BUTTERS their WEETABIX. can you even imagine?!’

However, although it’s certainly a less common way to devour the popular breakfast snack, normally served up with milk, Chakraverty found that many people commenting thought it was actually a delicious idea.

Even Nigella Lawson chimed in, saying: ‘When I was young, children were often given Weetabix spread with butter and jam after school!

Dry as a bone or the ultimate comfort food? Michael Chakraverty, a 2019 Bake Off contestant, shared his exasperation at seeing four of the popular cereal biscuits covered in butter and served up in a bowl, saying: ‘Can you even imagine?!’

Some suggested that serving the cereal as you might a round of buttered toast transformed it into a comfort food – with a sprinkling of sugar, or a layer of jam also popular additions.

@SarahHa14256341 added: ‘I love buttered Weetabix!’

@NathanielJHall penned: ‘Add some jam and I’m in.’ and @lextf92 wrote: ‘Omg. I legit thought my family was the only one. I do this all the time! It’s delicious!’

For others, like Nigella, nostalgia played a part. @Anita59008059 wrote: ‘We had these often. I’m a 1950’/60’s kid..it was our normal fodder, sometimes we’d have a sprinkle of sugar ontop too…’

@Wake_X agreed, saying: ‘Ohhhh yeah! I grew up on this! It’s delish!!’

Others protested, @emcroghan1 asked: ‘But it’s the driest substance known to man, how can butter possibly make it moist enough to eat?’

@LizzieAllen1 concurred, saying: ‘No. Sacrilege. No no no. Weetabix and milk with a little sugar and maybe some strawberries. Definitely NO butter. Butter is for a nice slice of toast with jam.’

The British cereal company behind Weetabix has tried various takes on the high-fibre, low calorie breakfast dish in a bid to woo in new customers.

However, the brand raised eyebrows on Twitter last year after it suggested fans should try to eat baked beans from Heinz on their cereal, and even shared a picture of the bizarre dish by way of encouragement.

The stunt didn’t seem to inspire any takers, but it certainly achieved its aim of attracting attention with everyone from Which? to the official Twitter account of the NHS rushing to express disapproval.
